Dear Dyanna,

Pa'Long and Ma'Long must've been clearing out their store room because I don't remember seeing this last time we were over. This used to be Abang Nafis's chair... that's a good ten years ago at least, and they gave it to you. Now it's your turn to use the chair, just like the rocking chair in your doll house. You told everybody how this chair is just like your doll house chair. And you happily sat in it and rocked and rocked. Ucu took the pictures of you with your chair. I wonder how long before you get too big for the chair, and which of your toys will get to sit in the chair. In the mean time, let's just enjoy the rocking chair.

Happy Second Birthday!

Dear Dyanna,

First attempt at making and decorating Dyanna's birthday cake

 This year mommy decided to bake your birthday cake. Thinking if I use a mould and a cake mix to bake your cake with, it'll make the job even easier. The mistake was the cake mix, it took one hour to bake! And because when mommy tested the cake for doneness at almost the end of hour, the skewer didn't come out clean, and left it for another five minutes. That's how pickachu came out extra tanned.

The mould didn't fit all the batter and used that to make mini heart shaped cakes and a smaller flower shaped cake.

That's a lot of cake.

Mommy cut up a slice of chocolate cake to make pickachu eyes and nose, and his cheeks came from an apple, and used a pink food marker to colour in his mouth.

I tried my hand at frosting and piped all around pickachu to 'outline' him and hid the parts that crumbled off. Used heart shaped sprinkles and hundreds and thousands to decorate the rest. And the letters were cheese.

Mommy used bento making tools, skills and ingenuity and applied it to make your birthday cake.

I figured I have lots more birthdays to perfect this birthday cake making skills. One of mommy's friend made Sponge Bob for her son's 6th birthday, so there is still hope for mommy yet.

Getting ready to have dinner, drumstick at a ready. Can't remember what mommy was doing in the kitchen in the background...

 Mommy and daddy, mostly mommy, figured this year we'll have a quiet celebration for your birthday. Your Nini Noi was appalled to learn that we didn't plan a party of some sort to celebrate your birthday, she knew this a week before at your second cousin's 4th birthday party. You already had your big birthday bash when you turned 1, and mommy figured we can have a birthday party when you understand what birthdays are all about.

So there we were thinking it'll just be you, mommy and daddy with the birthday cake.

Then your Nini Noi, Nini Boy and Auntie Lin turned up. Prior to that they say they will be dropping by with some food. When they turned up, your Nini Noi brought dinner along. Fortunately that day mommy with the help of Auntie Wina cleaned up the living room and dining room. Phew.

After realising that dinner was in the bag, we quickly set the table. We ate roast chicken, potatoes and salad that night, it was a good meal.

While mommy cleaned up after dinner, everybody hung out in your playroom where they spent time with you. You had a good time enjoying the attention.

You got a few presents, money, a Skip Hop lady bug bag from Uda, books from Auntie Elaine, and daddy got you a magnetic activity board.

For you, it's just another day, for us, it has been two years you are in this world, not a day goes by that mommy still thinks it's amazing of how you came into our lives. Every day is cherished, and you are learning in leaps and bounds. Every day you continue to amaze us with your antics and development. And pretty soon you'll be starting school.

Happy Birthday Dyanna, mommy daddy will always love you. May you grow into a great person and do yourself proud, we'll be here cheering you on.

PS, your cake was a bit too sweet for our taste, so we gave the whole lot away to your cousins in madang the next day...

ISB Toddler's Group

Sharing toys...

Dear Dyanna,

Since you'll be starting school in a few months time, to help you get used to the environment it was advised that you join the toddler's Group the school have once a week during term time. You were suppose to have gone from the beginning of the year but mommy and daddy never gotten around to bringing you until last month. The timing is a bit odd for either of us and daddy took leave or in lieu from work to bring you, it's a good you and daddy time.

You met lots of other childrens more or less around your age. You got to play with lots of other toys and activities, daddy said you liked the sand pit very much.

Mommy would pack you cold water and a snack bento to bring, knowing it's a hot day as you are there from 3pm to 5pm. Daddy gets a bento too for tea, and daddy said both of you would sit down to eat. There was an incident one time where a little girl drank from your water bottle because she saw your water was nice and cold on a hot day.

Daddy would tell mommy stories of the parents he met at toddlers group and stories of the other children and how they interacted with you.

We hoped you'll be familiar and comfortable with being there, come September, that's where you'll be spending your mornings for the next two years...

Dear Dyanna,

One day mommy decided to let's try out for a baby photography competition. All we had to do was take you to the photo studio that was doing the competition and get you to pose for the camera, more or less.

At first you weren't happy being there and kept on asking to go home. We played around and you got comfortable, and by the time we, daddy included, went to do the photo shoot, you were comfortable and was really happy. The photographer was so happy with your performance that he managed to take so many wonderful shots of you that we decided to buy all the pictures. We had a hard time trying to decide which photo to use for the competition.

Can't wait for when we get the pictures,  so we can print out and have a nice family photo hanging at home.

One Fine Sunday Up a Hill...

On on! Up and away!

Dear Dyanna,

The third hash to qualify for member of the Junior Hash House Harriers Brunei chapter was done. At the next hash, you're member!

This time you had four adults who went into the jungle with you, mommy, Ucu, Auntie Wina and her boyfriend who took all the pictures. Location, near Nini Boy's house.

We saw lovely pitcher plants in the beginning of the beginning of the trail, and just before we entered the jungle you said out "Cat! Meow... meow... meow...." we didn't see a cat, but you did.

It was Ucu's first time hashing, once in a while mommy asked how she's doing, and she'd reply with, "I'm trying to conserve my breath by not speaking unnecessarily." For someone who was trying to conserve her breath, she sure got a long reply.

Where as Dyanna was strapped on mommy's back all the way. You weren't interested in getting down. So there was mommy, carrying an almost 14kg on my back, going up and down and up and down the many hills that were in the jungle.

After crossing many streams and changing terrains, we were in a quiet part of the forest, tall trees canopy up above and a bed of old grown leaves on the ground, and the ground was sloping upwards as we headed up, you started meowing again, like as if you're calling out to a cat. We didn't see anything, or couldn't see anything. Was it the same cat you saw?

We managed to finish in under an hour, not bad as there was no toddler route this time around, there was only medium and long run, and we did the medium.

We saw Auntie Adeline who was four and a half months pregnant, but we didn't stay long, we left and headed home.

Potty Time!

Wonderwoman's potty when she was a baby...

Dear Dyanna,

Potty training has begun, mommy just hadn't really been that consistent with it, and daddy gets nervous if you're running around without a diaper. You broke the potty time dvd daddy bought for you and we haven't even watched it fully. On days when it's just you and me, mommy would leave you naked as it has been hot lately, and it'll be easier to put you straight onto the potty when it looks like you're about to go. Most of the time you'll go all quiet and next thing mommy knew, there's a puddle on the floor, and sometimes you're not even that far from the potty. Good thing we have the traditional lampin squares handy to wipe up with.

Your potty had been in view for a very long time, until one day, you started playing with it, and that was when mommy figured it is time to introduce to you what it's all about.

You would sit on the potty, and then get up and say 'All done', and you and mommy would look into the potty and nothing is in it. You'd look at me and say, 'Nada!' and go off playing again.

Sometimes mommy managed to catch you just as you're about to start peeing and plop you straight onto the potty and you'll finish up there. Sometimes mommy misses the moment completely and there's a big puddle on the floor. Sometimes, we get successful elimination all in the potty, and when that happens mommy cheered with joy and try to get you all excited about it.

Auntie Nadia told mommy when she was potty training her boys, she got 5 potties in the house, and there was the pressure to potty train. I guess maybe because we don't have that pressure which is probably why mommy is quite laid back about this. And I doubt we're going to get more than the one potty that was given to us, unless we get the wonderwoman potty, that looks cool. Maybe when mommy is able to take leave, have lots of lampin ready for messes, and leave you diaperless, probably we can get more success.

The Tango Gala Night

Dear Dyanna,

Daddy texted mommy one day asking if I'm up to go to a place that night for Auntie Jac's tango thing, so mommy said sure and next thing mommy knew, I had to find out the details.

Later that evening, after dressing you up in a black dress, we went. We got there early, there was Auntie Elaine taking care of the door, and on the floor were two pairs of tango dancers doing their moves, the ladies took advantage that no one was around yet to practice their footwork with the male dance instructors.

Mommy and daddy don't dance ballroom for your info. We were there to support Auntie Jac who will be doing a performance.

Whilst waiting for the crowd to thicken, you took turns with mommy and daddy to dance on the floor. You loved to run around in circles while holding our hands and we'd jump, skip and hop, and you would say 'dance mommy/daddy, dance!'

You were the first to eat dinner from the buffet spread that was out, thai food... Mommy thought it's weird to have thai food with tango... you mostly ate the leafy vegetables, a couple of oatmeal prawns, and the lemongrass chicken.

While mommy ate, you were playing with daddy at the interesting wall divider the place had. You met some people we knew, and you went dancing while everybody was eating so you had the floor all to yourself. And then you wanted to dance with mommy and you'd tug my hand and said, 'dance, dance'. But before we could get to the floor, the announcer said, 'The floor is open' and all of the sudden everybody at the table stood up and with their partners all did their tango. You just stood and watched. Amazed? Surprised? Shocked? Either way, you didn't want to move.

We saw couples twirled, stepped, swayed. I'm not sure whether to the beat of the music, because I couldn't get the rhythm they were moving to. And everybody was too busy looking down at their feet! It was an interesting and strange sight.

Mommy asked if you'd like to dance but there was no response. So mommy picked you up and we danced to our own moves amongst the tango goers. After a fashion, you started to signal for milk. While you nursed as we sat back at our table, your eyes were looking sleepy and we decided better to head home now even though Auntie Jac hadn't made her debut yet.

After a long goodbye, Auntie Jac will be gone for a month, we went back home, changing into your jammies and night diaper in the car on the drive home.

Hope you had an interesting time. When you are older, mommy will enroll you into a kids hip hop class!

When M'sian Cousins Came Visiting

Dyanna, Fatimah and Lutfi

Dear Dyanna,

Few months ago we had the pleasure to have relatives over from the Malaysian Peninsula staying with Atok and Nenek. For a few days you got live in playmates in the form of your second cousins, Lutfi, who was 2 and Fatimah, who was 4. The three of you played with anything you were able to lay your hands on. 

Mommy brought over a pop up tent and tunnel that I had bought earlier and figured you would play with it more if you could see others playing with it. It was a pop up elephant and a caterpillar tunnel, a day after mommy set it up, you followed Fatimah and Lutfi in and out and around the elephant and caterpillar. One funny incident was you followed Lutfi and crawled into the tunnel, and half way through you tried to stand up, you kept on saying 'sorry' when you realised you couldn't stand up, and you panicked and started crying. Mommy pulled you out and after a quick comfort nurse you were back playing again.

Lutfi and Fatimah's mommy and daddy came over to our house because they want to come visit, and while they were over, their mommy saw your diapers and she asked about them, and mommy explained how your cloth diapers works and why we're using them. Lutfi and Fatimah's mommy looked very excited with the prospect of using CDs, while that was happening, Lutfi and Fatimah was happily playing with your toys at home. Where was Dyanna? You were at Nenek napping during that time...

On the day they were leaving, mommy packed the elephant and caterpillar and gave it to them to bring back, as a memory of the time when the three of you played together, because we don't know when the next time we'll get to see them again. I hope when we do, all of us would just pick up from where we left off...

Just opened up a christmas present from Auntie Jac by the Christmas tree...

Baby Eating...

 Dear Dyanna,

Mommy found some pictures of you eating.

On the left a picture of you eating spaghetti from your bento box. The newspaper on the table was so that it'll be easier to clean up the mess after you're done.

This is a common occurence.

The mess and the newspaper as placemat.

But it doesn't matter, you eat by yourself.

One of the amazing thing at that time was the fact that you like to eat celery. Raw.

This picture showed you eating a whole celery stick. Mommy was in the kitchen cutting up some vegetables and you asked for celery, I took out a stick with the intention to cut it up into smaller finger sized ones. I only managed to cut off the ends of the large stick when you decided you wanted the whole thing. Whole.

Mommy is proud you like to eat your vegetables.

The Birthday Kitty

Snow being used as a pillow while you watched Elmo on TV

Dear Dyanna,

For your first birthday, you got given a 3 month old white domestic long hair kitten from your Atok. Your daddy decided to name him Elijah Snow.

Now, that kitten is an integral part of the family, you would play with him, and hug him if you could, and you'd get upset when he doesn't want to play house with you.

There were times when you would whack him, use him like a pillow or a mattress, and sit on him even. Mommy would have to rescue him. No matter what you did to Snow, he had never laid his claws on you.

When we come home or when you woke up in the morning, Snow would be the first name you would call out.

Sometimes when you're in bed for a nap or sleep, Snow would lie beside you and kept you company for a spell.

Hopefully Snow will stay with us for a good long while, because he is such a good cat and a dear friend to you...

Now that play pen had been packed and stored long time ago, your diapers have exploded and are now kept in a dresser and you're running everywhere...

The 2nd Holiday

First time at a playground, albeit small but that doesn't matter!

Dear Baby,

Last year we went on holiday twice. Same destination as we are quite happy heading there and mommy and daddy have friends there we get to meet up.

The second trip was significantly different to the first trip, you can walk now. You played at your first playground in a shopping mall. 

Outside the Art & Science Museum, somebody was looking grumpy

 You went to your first art exhibition, Salvador Dali no less. You ran around the space they had. You saw strange sculptures and weird drawings. You messed about in the souvenir shop and you took the hearts of the ticket selling counter staff.

And played with water on the roof tops of one of many shopping places over there. While daddy went to check out the shops, you and mommy headed over to the outdoor playground where they have water fountains. You were fine playing on your own until one of the water stream caught you square in the face. After that you didn't want to play anymore and was content to watch the other kids play while you had your snack.

 It wasn't until when daddy came back were you willing to play again because now, you have daddy with you. More confident.

Step! Step! Step!

The baby changing room was right there too, after you had enough, it was convenient for us to head over there to change, dry you up and get dressed.

Mommy was happy to see you play, learn and experience new things this holiday. This trip, mommy only shopped for bento gears and was more than happy to just spend the rest of the time with you and daddy. It was a very nice holiday...

The First Hash

Dear Baby,

Yesterday, the third sunday of the month and year, mommy took you to your first kids hash! It was a couple of firsts too, the first time mommy had driven with you more than ten minutes in the car, and the first time you got to explore the great backyard! (in reference to your Signing Time: My Great Outdoors DVD).

We got to the site and parked behind Auntie Wina and Uncle Joey just as they were getting themselves ready. Mommy had already thrown our water bottles into a backpack with a small towel and wipes and some money. We walked up to the gathering site which was located at someones home. Mommy signed you in as guest and paid the $10. For the next three runs it'll cost $10 per run, after that you'll be member of the Junior Hash House Harriers and would only need to pay $6 instead per run as JH3 only happens once a month.

We were a bit late and the run had already started, 4pm, we went in after checking which paper trail to follow, there were two, a short run and a long run. Since it was your first, we all decided to do the short run, and for that particular run, we were to follow the long wide paper strips.

You decided that Monkey should come with you and he followed us in as well. The first part was walking through the uneven grassy grounds. The next part was crossing a small plank that goes over a little stream, and the beginning of an upward climb up a hill. Auntie Wina started singing and mommy joined in:

Lets pack our bags, and grab a tent we're going to explore,

Open the door,

Head down the trail,

Over the bridge,

Carefully cross the stream,

Into the woods,

Climb a mountain,

Explore our great backyard!

You watched that DVD so many times we have memorised the lyrics! Uncle Joey was impressed, he thought Auntie Wina and Mommy came up with the song just like that. We told him where it came from, heheh.

And climb a mountain we did. The forested hill was just going up and up, and since you didn't want to walk, mommy had to carry you, Auntie Wina carried Monkey, and us three adults haven't hashed in ages so all of us were finding it a little bit exhausting. You walked a little bit on the hill, and when you stopped mommy picked you up again.

When we reached the top of the hill, there was a clearing and we took a break so mommy can give you some water to drink and we looked at the view, there was a housing estate in the yonder and we wondered which development that must be, guessing on our calculation, it could be Meraggang. While we were there more children and their parents turned up and we decided to move on before the little clearing got crowded.

Downhill we go, we went through the bracken, again you walked a little bit and then mommy carried you the rest of the way, we saw the trail had split into two, one fore the short run and the other for the long run. We kept to our paper and turned right. After the bracken we got to another clearing. Auntie Wina took the opportunity for you to learn textures and you touched the fuzzy mop of grass and the leaves from nearby branches and kept you clear of the razor grass.

The paper trail lead us to a ledge, mommy went down first and Auntie Wina handed you over and mommy got a hold of you and all of us got down onto a rocky terrain. That was when mommy wanted to take a picture to commemorate your first hash! There were lots of other children by then passing by as we were almost near the end of the trail and you walked most of the way after that. And just as the trail ended, you wanted to be carried again and mommy carried you all the way to the starting site and signed you out.

There was a coupon for food and drink and we claimed it, which was a hotdog with onions and a juice pack that day, which you don't fancy so mommy had some. Auntie Wina and Uncle Joey had kebabs from the kebab stall that had set up shop, other kids and adults were seen eating fish and chips too. There were mandarin oranges handed out and mommy had some and you had a bite as well. You were mesmerized to see the bigger kids running around, and some were playing ball. Mommy learnt and realised that it was the Chinese New Year run and there was a lion dance troop setting up ready to give their performance. Some kids started beating the drum with their hands and you wanted to join in too, and you asked mommy to carry you and pointed you wanted to go there, so we walked up to the drum and you started banging away. Mommy put you down and directed you to the lower end of the drum and you were able to reach standing on tippy toes and you were the shortest amongst the kids who were banging on the drums. Mommy should've taken a picture of that.

We positioned ourselves as best able and we jumped when the firecrackers started, mommy wished I had brought your BabyBanz earmuffs and used my hands to cover your ears to try to lessen the noise of the firecrackers and the clashing cymbals. The lion was dancing and everyone stood and sat around watching the performance. You had the opportunity to feed one of the lion with a couple of red packet ang pows, you were delighted to be able to be so close to the lion and stroked the lion. We left not long after that as it was time we should be heading home. As we walked back to the car we could still hear the sound of the lion dance.

At first you didn't want to be strapped in and mommy had to sing 'row row row your boat' before you calmed down. And we left the place in a good mood, you played with your toys and we got home just before the sun had set. That night you slept by 8pm and totally exhausted and so was mommy.

Food Stories

Dear Baby,

You're appetite have been really good lately, when you're not distracted that is. What is cool is how you are willing to try different foods. Like for instance today during lunch, you wanted to try the fresh bean sprouts and pineapples and you really like them because you asked for more. You now insist in order for you to eat a banana you must get to whole the banana with the peel half way off, and munch away like the adults, where as before we'd give you either a quarter or half a banana. You like the Laughing Cow cream cheese cubes as snacks, with mummy's help to peel the foil off. You prefer celery to cucumber now, and daddy had successfully made your carrot and celery miso soup, his first time cooking for you last weekend.

In the new year, we went to have japanese food for dinner. You ate the garlic rice, chicken udon soup, tofu miso, and you finished off the shaved ice that came with the salmon sashimi. I wonder what'll happen when you discover ice creams and sorbets... Not going to find out anytime soon.

You had your first taste of cookie, daddy was eating a homemade cookie at a recent birthday party we went to and gave you a bite when mommy went to get you more watermelon. Two bites, that's it for you. No more cookies. You started to eat watermelons again after not eating them for at least six months.

And you had your first juice, fresh watermelon juice and carrot juice, which mommy orders without sugar, and you wanted to try, and kept it in without spitting out, which what you would do before.

Speaking of drinks, you also drink cow's milk, low fat variety since that is the only type at home. But I think it is so you get to hold the box and play with it and squeeze milk out everywhere after a couple of sips.

But water and breast milk is still your go to place for a thirst quencher and food and comfort.

Yes, you have this affinity with cold water and ice in various forms. And whenever you get washed up or having a bath, you'd take a cup and drink the water or straight from the tap even!

You always ask for soup with every meal, and eat the soup yourself with a spoon handled by you. There is a lot of clean up every time but at least you're hand eye coordination is improving.

You like the sliced garlic that gets added into stir fries, so now whenever mommy cooks, I'll always add in extra garlic for you.

The only time you would eat bread is if it's a pizza or toasted cheese sandwiches which you also call pizza.

I know various people have sneaked in other carb based foods such as crackers and rice puffs. They may not think I don't know but it's obvious when you ask more of it! It made me wonder if I should print out a list of yes and no foods you are allowed. Anything that comes out of a packet or a box ready to eat is a big NO! Because of all the chemicals, colourings, stabilizers, processing, artificial flavours colours, preservatives, trans fats that can wreck havoc for you in the long run. I am going to try and keep them away from you for as long as I could because mommy knows what those things can do to you, and we are going for fresh wholesome foods as much as possible.

Work

This only lasted 5 minutes...

Dear Baby,

Today, you get to come with mummy to mommys' work place. Lets see how this will go... So far you had a walk down the corridor, met a couple of mommy's colleagues, had your bento and dismantled mommy's bento. And now it's nursing time, and it's only 10AM. Several more hours to go....

One and A Half Year Check Up

Dear Baby,

Mommy missed out on the 1 year check up (can't remember the details)... but we have done the 1 and a half years check up!

The nurses gave an appointment date few days after you turned 17 months.

You weighed in at 12.6kg and a height of... I forgot in centimeters but it's 31 inches, oooh, 2.5 feet tall.

The nurse asked if your teeth came out, and daddy told you to do the cheeky face to the nurse and you did and she got to see your teeth.

The nurse asked whether you are eating porridge or regular food. Regular food for as long as when food got introduced to you.

The nurse asked if you were allergic to eggs. We say no as there seem to be no reaction whenever you eat dishes that have eggs in them.

The nurse asked if we want to give you a flu shot as they currently have in stock. Daddy and I decided there is no need, and daddy said you looked very happy about that.

And that was it, your next check up is when you turn 2, appointment date on the 14th June.

Monkey became one of your favourite toy to bring around

Oh, prior to us going to the clinic for your check up, we went out for breakfast first, you had the grilled tomatoes and mushrooms. Then when you got restless mommy took you for a walk and we passed by this shop that had stuffed toy monkeys, we went inside and mommy asked if you wanted to hold a monkey, and you nodded your head. Mommy didn't realise you wanted to take the monkey and almost walked out from the shop. Mommy managed to convince you to put the monkey back and we'll look for daddy so you can show him the monkey. We went back to the restaurant and you and daddy went out to the shop while mommy paid the bill. When mommy got to the shop there you were holding two monkeys! But daddy only said one and you let go of the other one. So now you have a proboscis monkey soft toy in your collection.

Runny Poo Incident

Dear Baby,

There was one episode where mommy, daddy and you were sick. It was the first weekend of puasa, we went out with a kindermusik family who’s baby was in the same class as you for dinner. We went to a place we never ate at before, it was also the first time for them.

The next day, mommy had a bad tummy, thought it was just mommy. Apparently daddy had it too. And you had a runny poo. But we all didn’t think much about it until the day after, when one early morning you woke up and threw up! Fortunately your pediatrician was open on Sunday and we got some medicine for you.

That day we changed your diapers what seemed like every half hour and every time we tired to give you your medication you instantly threw up. You were still playing and eating as normal apart from stuff coming out at both ends. Nappy liners and sudocrem was always ready in hand. All your flat diapers were at nenek that time, and mommy used what few there was at home. The next few days were more throwing up and runny poo. We switched you to using flats for easier changing and washing until everything was all clear. With all the frequent pooing you developed a rash, a rarity.

We encouraged you to drink water and nursed a lot to make sure you were hydrated. It wasn’t until your throwing up episode lessen were you able to keep your medication down was when we started seeing the runny poo diminishing. Ten days it took before we had the all clear. You had to miss out one of your kindermusik class, we don’t want to infect anybody and have accidents happening.

Well, that was an interesting episode, and we're never going to that restaurant again.
